Why is this sad? Because our Western ideals say so? That is how people live in China, it is their culture. They obviously do not have a lot of money, but how do you truly know that the lady in the picture is sad?
You are so right, I totally forgot that the Chinese people want to have their homes taken from them, living in poverty, happily disassembling our e-waste. It’s so ideal, all in the name of showing the rest of the world all they progress they’ve made. How backwards of me, I really need to stop thinking that other people have the same basic needs and desires as us. Thanks for setting me straight.
china has already lifted millions of it’s citizens out of poverty, it has only been 18 years since they started opening up, there is still a lot to be done, lots of problems to solve. What they need is our support and a helping hand. I’m sure if you go into any major city you’ll find slumps and “piles of bricks”…
Wow what a bit of news. You have a heck of a story! You are probaly against nuclear power too. Do you know 20% of the electrons traveling through you computer come from a nuclear power plant. Do you know how anything really works? What do you want; a cookie? Just stop the hate.
This gap between rich and poor proves that China has accepted the Free Market and is therefore truly free. Why do you think Bush is in Beijing now? To show Americans that it’s okay for us to ship all of our jobs to this freedom-loving nation.
This photo is great - it shows the Face of China - this is China - beautiful, fake facade and rotten, dirty rubbish behind the facade!!! Do Chinese really think foreigners are so stupid? Do Chinese realize that they lose face by doing this kind of things??? Who’s stupid?

Honestly, do you think the world does not know china’s poverty? there are places in america that are just as bad as china. Do you think that america is some sort of super amazing place to be? do americans like you think that foreigners are that stupid? people like you make being an american suck
I think whoever “andrew” is, is stupid. Everybody knows about China’s poverty already, and I don’t think China’s embarassed of it either. They just tried their hardest to make foreigners feel at home while competing at the olympics. Andrew, you are an asshole.

she’s just doing her laundry people, just because she doesn’t have a manicured lawn and pretty signs advertising to her doesn’t mean she’s not living life to the fullest. stop being so superficial people!
I live in one of the stupid countries in the world, half of you are barely literate! Run for cover, the stupidity wars have been lost. Enjoy watching your overlords ruin the planet because the Americans are too stupid to stop them.
What’s so sad about it? It’s called poverty, it exists all over the world, even in your precious united states. Wow, the Olympics are in a place where there’s also poverty. It’s gotta be the first time in four years!
Que decepcion el aparentar algo que no es. Lo mismo paso con la niña que canto en el evento. Ya la tecnologia esta muy abanzada y la gente no estan ingenua como antes.

Pictures like this aren’t astonishing anymore.
Maybe the photographer would do better taking pictures of America’s drastic situation as well.
Seriously, enough about everyone else’s problems.
LOL why is the camera angled as if it were laying up against the wall on the left side me thinks photoshop.but you can find this type of propaganda all over the place
good artwork and perspective will always draw controversy, and the comments show a lot of people trying to discredit this. I think its a great pic, and can cause anyone to think.
Photographers take pictures where they find them. If they are currently in Beijing for the Olympics and they find an intriguing composition that tells a story they will take that picture. They might have taken that picture in many countries both Eastern and Western, First World and Third World…
Facades are part of any City. They hide things both temporary and permanently. I watched a documentary on the preparations for the Olympics in China and what they did along Cycling routes and Marathon routes… Facades and screening meant they could beautify without tearing down. An ugly shop, that still made money for a family could still stand. The money lost in tearing it down used elsewhere. (whether good or bad)
The angles on the photograph art to capture both sides of the facade at once. It seems now with any interesting image people cry “Photoshop”! I am not sure if they would know what to look for. I do photomanipulation myself and am told I am pretty good. Most any image you might find might have been “Photoshopped”. …of course I use “Paintshop Pro”…
In what way is this sad? It’s reality. Not to mention the fact there are *plenty* of places like this in the US.
